Register, dialect and variation in Italian
How the speaker, the setting and the relationship between people shape language.
Context
A portfolio synthesis of two individual Italian-language studies: a transcription and register analysis of La danza del gabbiano from Il commissario Montalbano, and an analysis of the Bolognese dialect text Al piôv.
Approach
- Transcribe dialogue and examine changes between everyday, colloquial, regional and bureaucratic Italian.
- Relate register to interlocutors and situations, including the change to a formal register when discussing a patient's prognosis.
- Examine Bolognese spelling, phonetics, consonants, morphology, syntax and vocabulary.
What the work produced
Two academic analyses demonstrating how linguistic variety depends on social, regional and communicative context. This case study brings the supplied coursework together rather than presenting it as a new research project.
Connection to interpreting
Knowing the language is only the starting point. An interpreter also needs to recognise who is speaking, to whom, and with what purpose.
